Tragic Ybor City Crash Claims Four Lives; Suspect Remains in Custody Awaiting Hearing

TAMPA, Fla. — Tragedy Strikes Ybor City as Reckless Driving Claims Four Lives

In a devastating incident early Saturday morning, a high-speed crash in Ybor City has left four people dead and 13 others injured. The suspect, 22-year-old Silas Sampson, faces multiple charges, including four counts of vehicular homicide, and will remain in custody until a hearing on Thursday.

The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) is actively investigating the crash, which occurred when Sampson’s vehicle plowed into the patio of Bradley’s, a popular bar on 7th Avenue. Witnesses reported that the vehicle was seen driving recklessly and street racing prior to the incident. FHP is urging anyone with information to come forward by contacting them at FHP (347).

According to authorities, the tragic sequence of events began around 12:40 a.m. when FHP’s Air Service unit spotted a vehicle speeding on I-275. After exiting the interstate, Sampson’s vehicle was pursued by law enforcement but the chase was called off just blocks from the crash site due to safety concerns for pedestrians.

The aftermath of the crash was harrowing. Three victims died at the scene, while a fourth succumbed to injuries at the hospital. Among the 13 injured, two are in critical condition, while others range from stable to minor injuries. The victims, all adults, were enjoying a night out when the tragedy struck.

“This was a senseless tragedy,” said Tampa Police Chief Lee Bercaw. “Our hearts are with the loved ones of the victims and all those impacted. Reckless driving put innocent lives in danger.”

Sampson, who was previously cited for speeding just weeks ago, was taken into custody at the scene. His first court appearance is scheduled for Sunday morning, where his defense team expressed they had not yet reviewed the state’s motion for detention.

In response to the tragedy, Tampa Mayor Jane Castor described the crash as “devastating,” and the community is coming together to honor the victims. A candlelight vigil is planned for Saturday evening at Bradley’s, inviting attendees to bring candles to remember those lost and stand in solidarity.

As the investigation continues, the community mourns the loss of life and grapples with the impact of reckless driving. Tampa Bay 28 will provide updates as more information becomes available.
