As the New York Yankees gear up for the 2026 season, fans can expect a significantly revamped coaching staff. Longtime bullpen coach Mike Harkey and infield/first base coach Travis Chapman will not return next season, according to reports from SNY’s Andy Martino. Additionally, assistant hitting coach Pat Roessler will also be stepping down from his role, although the Yankees are exploring other positions for him within the organization.
In a strategic move, Jake Hirst, who has been serving as the team’s minor league hitting coordinator, will be promoted to join Aaron Boone’s big league staff. This transition signals a shift in the Yankees’ approach as they look to revitalize their performance on the field.
The coaching changes come on the heels of a disappointing season for the Yankees, particularly for their bullpen, which posted a 4.37 ERA—ranking 23rd in Major League Baseball. Injuries plagued the team, and high-leverage pitchers struggled to find their rhythm. The situation worsened after a trade deadline overhaul, with the bullpen’s ERA ballooning to 4.74 in the final stretch of the regular season.
Harkey, who is approaching his 59th birthday, has been a staple of the Yankees’ coaching staff for 16 seasons, having previously held the bullpen coach position from 2008 to 2013 before returning in 2016. Under his guidance, the Yankees’ bullpen had previously ranked among the best in the league, but this year’s struggles ultimately led to his departure.
Chapman, who completed his fourth year as the infield coach, also faced challenges this season. The Yankees recorded the fifth-most errors at key infield positions, and the regression of young shortstop Anthony Volpe—who ended the season with 19 errors—was particularly concerning. Chapman had worked closely with Volpe to improve his defense, but the results fell short of expectations.
Roessler, 65, has served as an assistant hitting coach for two seasons. His exit adds to the uncertainty surrounding the Yankees’ hitting strategy moving forward. Meanwhile, the futures of pitching coach Matt Blake and major league field coordinator Tanner Swanson remain in limbo, as both have club options that need to be addressed. Additionally, bench coach Brad Ausmus and third base/outfield coach Luis Rojas are also on expiring contracts, with Rojas recently interviewing for the Orioles’ managerial position.
