WM of Florida Announces $88 Million Redevelopment of Tampa Recycling Facility
TAMPA, FL — Waste Management (WM) of Florida is set to embark on an ambitious $88 million redevelopment project at its material recovery facility site in East Ybor, promising to transform the landscape of recycling in the region. The initiative aims to replace the existing plant with a state-of-the-art, larger, and more automated recycling operation designed to significantly enhance processing capacity.
Located on an 11-acre site at 1400 N 35th St., the new facility will encompass a sprawling 109,000 square feet, positioned adjacent to the current building. Construction is slated to kick off in spring 2026, with the facility expected to open its doors by late 2027.
A Leap Forward in Recycling Capacity
The new plant is engineered to process an impressive 220,000 tons of recyclables annually, operating at a rate of 50 tons per hour on a dual-line system. This marks a substantial increase from the existing facility, which currently manages around 35 tons per hour.
“This is a whole new building,” stated Dawn McCormick, director of communications and government affairs for WM in Florida. “It will replace the function of the existing facility.” While the current building will remain on-site, its future use is still under consideration, with possibilities including recycling construction debris or serving as a transfer station.
Embracing Advanced Technology
The redevelopment project emphasizes cutting-edge automation, featuring 17 optical sorters designed to enhance material separation efficiency and precision. This advanced system allows WM to recover materials that were previously challenging to extract, resulting in cleaner bales for resale. Notably, this includes polypropylene plastics like yogurt tubs and plastic film such as grocery bags.
“The advantage of this technology is that you can process more material more efficiently and produce a cleaner product,” McCormick explained. “That improves the economics of recycling for our business and for our municipal customers.” Despite the increased reliance on automation, the facility will still require manual sorting roles, with plans to upskill existing employees to work alongside the new systems.
A Broader Vision for Recycling
The Tampa project is part of WM’s larger investment strategy, which focuses on scaling recycling infrastructure through modernization and automation. The company plans to invest over $1.4 billion in new and upgraded recycling facilities across North America, aiming to add approximately 2.8 million tons of incremental annual processing capacity.
The East Ybor facility follows similar successful projects in Florida, including a recently completed plant in Pembroke Pines that operates with comparable technology and higher throughput.
Looking Ahead
If all goes according to plan, the East Ybor facility will significantly bolster Tampa Bay’s recycling capacity, aligning the region with WM’s vision for automated, high-value recycling infrastructure. As the project progresses, local residents and businesses can look forward to a more efficient and effective recycling system that benefits the entire community.
