Wise to Close Tampa Office, Resulting in 306 Layoffs

Financial technology company Wise is set to close its Tampa office, resulting in 306 job layoffs. The company, known for its low-fee money transfer service, plans to shut down its operations at 4925 Independence Parkway, with layoffs scheduled to begin in April and continue through November.

Employees, referred to as Wisers within the company, will receive at least 60 days’ notice of their termination. The layoffs will affect various positions, including customer support specialists, customer support associates, and senior agent roles. Many of the jobs are being relocated to other Wise offices in Austin, New York, and São Paulo.

“We know this personally impacts our Wisers, especially in Tampa, and our immediate priority is to support each of our affected teammates during this time,” a company statement reads. Wise employees in Tampa are eligible to apply for positions in other locations and will receive an enhanced severance package and assistance in finding new employment.

Wise, formerly known as TransferWise, has more than 10 million active customers and handles over $25 billion in cross-country transactions each quarter. The company is headquartered in London and publicly traded on the London Stock Exchange, with offices in Tokyo, Singapore, and Estonia.

The closure of the Tampa office comes as Wise continues to invest in growing its teams and business in the Americas region. The company opened its Tampa operation in 2015 and had 443 employees at the Independence Parkway site in 2023. Wise did not receive any state or county incentives to expand in the Tampa Bay area, according to the Tampa-Hillsborough Economic Development Council.
