Florida’s History with Snow: Believe it or not, it has happened before!
Believe it or not, snowfall is not just reserved for the northern states during the winter months. In fact, Florida has seen its fair share of snow in the past, with some surprising occurrences that have left residents in awe.
The most recent snowfall in Florida happened on Jan. 3, 2022, in Okaloosa County. Snow flurries were captured on video falling from the sky, with temperatures dropping drastically from 75 degrees to snow in just a few hours. While the snow didn’t accumulate, it was still a rare sight for the Sunshine State.
Looking back a few years earlier, on Jan. 3, 2018, parts of north Florida and south Georgia saw snow accumulate thanks to a winter storm. This was the first significant snowfall in Florida since 1989, with most areas seeing less than half an inch of accumulation.
But perhaps the most surprising snowfall in Florida’s history occurred on Jan. 19, 1977, when snow fell in South Florida for the first time ever. Snow was reported as far south as Homestead and even on Miami Beach, marking a historic moment for the region.
These rare occurrences of snow in Florida serve as a reminder that anything is possible when it comes to weather. So, as parts of the Florida Panhandle brace for extreme cold and the possibility of accumulating snowfall, residents can look back on these past events and marvel at the wonders of nature.
