Florida’s Cold: A Unique Chill That Hits Different

TAMPA, Fla. — As temperatures dip across the Sunshine State this week, residents are bracing for what they affectionately call “Florida cold.” While folks in northern states might chuckle at the mild chill, many Floridians insist that the cold here feels distinctly different.

Ben Gordon, a resident of Davis Island, is among those who feel the bite of the cold. “A coat below 60, for sure,” he said, adding that while flip-flops might still be acceptable, a warm coat is a must.

The way locals dress during a cold snap varies widely. Christian Thomas, who moved to Tampa from North Carolina, shared his perspective: “Once it hits the 50s here, I’m in a sweatshirt. Back home, I’d be fine in the 40s.”

Interestingly, some residents attribute their sensitivity to the cold to their time spent in Florida. “My blood has thinned; I’ve lived here long enough,” Gordon remarked, highlighting how acclimatization can change one’s perception of temperature.

Oliver Baumohl, a newcomer from the UK, noted the unique humidity of Florida’s cold. “Here, it’s humid, so your lips don’t get all crusted like they do in dry places,” he explained. Despite his mother’s insistence on layering up, he often sheds his extra clothing as soon as he arrives at school.

However, not everyone finds Florida’s winter weather daunting. Terri Beegle, a snowbird from Pennsylvania, views the current temperatures as a welcome reprieve. “Back home, it’s going to be 11 degrees, so this is beautiful weather,” she said, adding that she would gladly trade her winter coat for a swimsuit.

For some, the chill is still a cause for concern. Gregory Rodriguez from Riverview stated, “When it’s like 40 degrees, that’s when I start putting on a coat.” His sentiments were echoed by others who find the current cold front a bit too brisk for comfort.

As the temperatures fluctuate, one thing is clear: whether it’s a light jacket or a full winter coat, Floridians have their own unique way of handling the cold. And while the rest of the country may laugh, for many in Tampa, this cold is as real as it gets.

Stay warm, Florida!
