Florida State Universities Increase Security for Graduation Ceremonies Amid Student Protests
As graduation season kicks off at Florida state universities, heightened security measures are being implemented in response to a wave of student protests, particularly those related to the conflict between Israel and Hamas.
Pro-Palestinian demonstrations have led to the arrests of dozens of protesters on at least three Florida university campuses this week. In light of these events, some schools have reported increased security and issued advisories detailing what is and isn’t allowed at commencement events.
University system Chancellor Ray Rodrigues issued a memo urging university presidents to protect the integrity of commencement ceremonies and ensure the safety of students. He emphasized that no ceremony should be canceled or modified due to unruly demonstrators.
The University of South Florida, which is currently hosting its commencement ceremonies, has implemented additional security measures on top of its normal protocols. USF spokeswoman Althea Johnson stated that there is a heightened law enforcement presence on campus this week.
Florida State University also published an advisory about prohibited behavior at its upcoming commencement ceremonies, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the solemnity of the occasion. Prohibited items include flags and signs, with law enforcement officials having discretion to prohibit additional items.
President Joe Biden addressed the protests during a media briefing, emphasizing the importance of upholding the right to free speech while condemning violent actions that disrupt public events. He stressed that peaceful protests are protected by law, but violence and property destruction are not.
Florida International University and Florida Gulf Coast University have also increased security measures for their graduation ceremonies to ensure a smooth and safe event for all attendees.
