Department of Education Investigates Antisemitic Discrimination at USF and UT

The Department of Education has recently sent letters to 60 colleges across the country, including the University of South Florida and the University of Tampa, regarding complaints of antisemitic discrimination and harassment.

The investigation at USF was prompted by pro-Palestinian protests that took place on campus last year, leading the university to update its on-campus protest policies for the Fall 2024 school year. In response to the letter from the Department of Education, USF provided a statement reaffirming its commitment to providing an environment free from discrimination and harassment, including antisemitism. The university has updated its policies to explicitly prohibit antisemitism and other forms of hateful expression targeting individuals based on their religion, shared ancestry, or cultural heritage. USF is also participating in Hillel International’s Campus Climate Initiative to address the rise of antisemitism on campuses.

The University of Tampa also received a letter from the DOE regarding an incident between two students in September 2023, which has since been resolved through the student conduct process. UTampa stated its commitment to being an inclusive learning community and condemned any form of discrimination, racism, or hate.

In other news, a paralyzed Florida woman has spoken out about Medicaid denying claims for essential medical gear she needs following a car accident that left her paralyzed from the chest down. The woman expressed her frustration at not being able to shower or get out of bed due to the lack of necessary medical equipment.

The letters from the Department of Education to these universities highlight the ongoing efforts to address discrimination and harassment on college campuses and ensure a safe and inclusive environment for all students.
