Three Florida Towns Shine Bright on USA Today’s Best Small Towns List

In a recent report by USA Today’s 10Best, three charming Florida destinations have captured the spotlight, ranking among the best small towns in the South. The towns—Inverness, Safety Harbor, and Cocoa Beach—are celebrated for their unique blend of relaxation, culture, outdoor adventures, and culinary delights.

Top Rankings

Inverness secured the impressive No. 3 spot, followed closely by Safety Harbor at No. 5 and Cocoa Beach at No. 8. The rankings were determined through a month-long voting process where travel experts nominated towns with populations under 25,000, and readers cast their votes for their favorites.

What Makes These Towns Special?

Inverness, located about 70 miles northwest of Orlando, is home to around 8,000 residents. The town is renowned for its beautifully renovated buildings, vibrant shopping scene, and diverse food offerings. Outdoor enthusiasts flock to Inverness for its 46-mile Withlacoochee State Trail, Fort Cooper State Park, and the picturesque Henderson Lake within the Tsala Apopka Chain of Lakes. The area is also famous for its natural springs, particularly Three Sisters Springs, where manatees gather during the winter months.

Safety Harbor, recovering from the impacts of recent hurricanes, is celebrated for its stunning scenery and lively downtown events that foster a welcoming community atmosphere. Visitors can enjoy a variety of waterfront activities and local entertainment options, making it a delightful destination for travelers.

Cocoa Beach, often referred to as a “bucket list small town,” is located near the Kennedy Space Center and is known for its relaxing beaches, vibrant surfing culture, and exciting pier activities. Just a short drive east from Orlando, Cocoa Beach offers a perfect blend of sun, surf, and space exploration.

A Broader Perspective

While these Florida towns have garnered local acclaim, the top-ranked Southern destination overall was Starkville, Mississippi. USA Today’s 10Best continues to highlight small towns across the nation for their historic sites, colleges, and unique attractions.

As travelers seek out relaxing getaways and cultural experiences, these three Florida towns stand out as must-visit destinations, each offering its own unique charm and appeal. Whether you’re cycling through scenic trails, enjoying waterfront events, or soaking up the sun on the beach, Inverness, Safety Harbor, and Cocoa Beach promise unforgettable experiences for all who visit.
