Washington Commanders’ Impressive Playoff Win Without Punting: A Rare Feat
The Washington Commanders pulled off an impressive upset win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the Wild Card Round of the NFL Playoffs by doing something rarely seen in playoff games. Despite scoring 23 points, it wasn’t just the scoring output that made the Commanders’ victory stand out. What set them apart was the fact that they managed to secure the win without punting once.
While the Commanders did go for it on multiple fourth downs, the two failed conversions both came within field goal range, meaning there was no need for a punt. This strategy of aggressive play without punting is a rare occurrence in playoff games, with only four teams achieving this feat since 2015. Interestingly, two of those teams, the 2017 New England Patriots and the 2020 Kansas City Chiefs, made it to the Super Bowl but ultimately fell short.
The Commanders will look to build on this impressive performance as they face the Detroit Lions next week. With the possibility of becoming the first team to win a Super Bowl after such a display, the Commanders are certainly a team to watch in the coming weeks.
