Discovering the Good in Tampa Bay: Highlighting Local Gems and News Events

ABC Action News is on a mission to showcase the best of Tampa Bay with their new series highlighting the good things happening around town. This week, the Good Morning Tampa Bay team focused on the University Area, uncovering some hidden gems and big news events impacting the community.

One of the highlights of the University Area is the Uptown Stage at University Mall, where the special needs community shines on stage. The Penguin Project, a program by New Tampa Players, pairs children and adults with special needs with peer mentors to put on an inspirational Broadway show.

For those looking for a peaceful retreat away from the hustle and bustle, the USF Botanical Gardens offer a serene escape right on the edge of the University of South Florida campus. The gardens provide a tranquil setting that makes you forget you’re just steps away from Fowler Avenue.

The University of South Florida is also home to some state-of-the-art facilities, including the USF Research Center building, which hopes to open up new opportunities for students with its lab, office, and meeting spaces. Additionally, the USF Contemporary Art Museum features famous works all year long, showcasing both world-renowned artists and pieces produced right on campus.

As MOSI celebrates 60 years in Tampa Bay, the Museum of Science and Industry remains a staple in the University area, offering fun for the whole family with exhibits like the giant dinosaur and zip-line. The Uptown Innovation District at University Mall is also undergoing a transformation to become a live, work, play destination, with plans to make the area a tech garage rather than a traditional mall.

Lastly, the University Area Community Development Corp. is working to ensure that Tampa families have access to affordable housing, with projects like Uptown Sky set to provide 61 affordable housing units once completed.
