From Homeless to Hope: Maria Rivera-Hernandez’s Journey to Stability at Tampa Hope

Former New York City Homeless Advocate Finds Hope in Tampa

Maria Rivera-Hernandez, a former director of social services dedicated to helping New York City’s homeless, found herself in a desperate situation after an abusive relationship and addiction led her to the sunbaked streets of Tampa. Living beside a bridge with just a bundle of belongings, she struggled to regain stability in a region where the cost of living was soaring.

Rivera-Hernandez’s journey took a turn last October when she arrived at Tampa Hope, a shelter run by Catholic Charities Diocese of St. Petersburg. Initially living in a tent on site, she was among the first to move into the shelter’s new tiny homes in April.

On Monday, Rivera-Hernandez joined others in celebrating the groundbreaking of a 7,000 square-foot community center at Tampa Hope. The facility, set to be completed next year, will serve as a hub for residents to access a range of social and medical services aimed at getting people off the streets and into permanent housing.

As the U.S. Supreme Court considers the legality of criminalizing sleeping outdoors, state and local governments are turning to tiny homes as a solution to the national cost of living crisis. Tampa Hope, which has served over 1,100 clients since opening in December 2021, is seen as a potential model for providing temporary relief.

With three meals a day and access to services like mental health counseling and medical care, Tampa Hope offers residents a chance to rebuild their lives. The shelter has already placed about a third of its clients into permanent housing.

Rivera-Hernandez, who now resides in a tiny home with her husband, will soon be moving into their own apartment near the University of South Florida’s Tampa campus. After almost a decade of marriage, they will finally have a place to call their own.

Tampa Hope’s success story serves as a beacon of hope for those struggling with homelessness, offering a path towards stability and a brighter future.
