Heroic Rescue Sparks Viral Saga: The Story of Terrence Concannon and “Lieutenant Dan”
Tampa Student’s Viral Rescue Sparks Concern for Sailor as Hurricane Milton Approaches
TAMPA, Fla. — In a remarkable twist of fate, University of Tampa senior Terrence Concannon found himself at the center of a viral saga that has captivated millions. While walking home from school in mid-September, Concannon encountered a man in a sailboat, struggling against the wind and being dragged out to sea.
“Not a single person would help me,” the sailor, 54-year-old Joseph Malinowski, recounted after being rescued. Concannon, however, sprang into action, pulling Malinowski back to safety with a rope, a gesture that would lead to an unexpected friendship and a growing online following.
As Hurricane Milton looms over Tampa, Concannon’s TikTok updates on Malinowski—now affectionately dubbed “Lieutenant Dan”—have garnered widespread attention. With the storm expected to make landfall late Wednesday or early Thursday, concerns are mounting for Malinowski, who has defiantly chosen to remain on his 20-foot sailboat despite warnings of a potentially life-threatening 15-foot storm surge.
Local officials have urged residents in evacuation zones to leave, emphasizing the dangers posed by the hurricane. Yet, Malinowski, who has been homeless for a decade and recently moved to Florida, remains steadfast in his decision to ride out the storm on his boat.
“I’ve slept through worse,” Malinowski told NBC News, recalling his experience during Hurricane Helene, which he weathered with minimal damage to his vessel. “My boat’s in better shape now than it was before, because it got washed.”
Concannon first shared their story on TikTok, posting a video titled “Lieutenant Dan vs Hurricane Helene” that has since amassed over 1.2 million views. As the saga unfolded, viewers became increasingly invested in Malinowski’s journey, flooding Concannon’s comments with requests for updates on the sailor’s well-being.
“Every single video I posted, I was getting thousands of comments like, ‘Where’s Dan? Check on Dan,’” Concannon said. His updates have not only entertained but also sparked a wave of support, leading to the creation of a GoFundMe page that has raised over $22,000 for Malinowski.
“I gave up on this world years ago because I’ve been on my own,” Malinowski shared in a TikTok update. “But Terrence here posted this video, and it started getting likes. People started realizing maybe he’s not just crazy; maybe he really does need help.”
With dreams of upgrading to a larger boat to create a more stable home, Malinowski expressed gratitude for the kindness shown by strangers. “Thank you to everybody that donated,” he said. “I want to get a bigger boat, something 35-foot, which is well in my price range.”
As Hurricane Milton approaches, Concannon and his followers are left with a mix of admiration and concern for “Lieutenant Dan.” With forecasters warning of the storm’s potential severity, the fate of the sailor remains uncertain, but his story has already made waves far beyond Tampa Bay.
