Campus Course: A New Era in Collegiate Apparel Born from Athletic Roots

By [Your Name]

In the bustling world of collegiate athletics, where school pride is a language of its own, Michael Melendez has carved out a niche that redefines how fans express their allegiance. After nearly a decade immersed in Division I sports, Melendez launched Campus Course, a Tampa-based collegiate apparel brand that prioritizes school identity over flashy branding.

A Vision from the Sidelines

Melendez’s journey began not in a design studio, but on the sidelines of stadiums and locker rooms, where he witnessed firsthand how colors, logos, and design choices evoke emotion and pride. “Born on Campus isn’t just a slogan,” he asserts. “Those years shape who you are. I wanted to build something that reflects that pride in a way that fits real life.”

Filling a Market Gap

Launched in February 2024, Campus Course aims to disrupt the collegiate apparel market, which Melendez believes often treats college licensing as an afterthought. “Most premium menswear brands place logos as secondary,” he explains. “I saw an opportunity to flip that model.”

Campus Course focuses on understated designs that allow customers to choose their school’s logo and its placement, ensuring that the institution takes center stage. “We intentionally remove our own logo from the outside of the apparel,” Melendez adds. “It’s not about being a billboard. It’s about identity.”

Licensed and Curated for Florida

Officially licensed through the Collegiate Licensing Company, Campus Course has partnered with several Florida universities, including Florida State University and the University of Central Florida, with plans to expand to the University of Florida and the University of Miami. Melendez’s background in athletics and fundraising has helped him gain credibility with licensing departments, ensuring that royalties from sales support student-athlete scholarships.

Design Philosophy: Subtlety Meets Versatility

One of the brand’s defining features is its commitment to subtlety. Instead of loud colors and oversized logos, Campus Course opts for muted palettes and textures that resonate with a professional environment. “There are moments when you want to show allegiance without shouting,” Melendez notes, highlighting the brand’s signature polos that allow for understated expression.

Overcoming Production Challenges

Creating high-quality apparel was not without its challenges. Early production attempts in the U.S. fell short of expectations, leading Melendez to seek overseas manufacturers known for supplying premium brands. “What matters is how you design, how you control quality, and how you build the brand around it,” he emphasizes.

Retail Expansion and Future Plans

Campus Course is currently exploring a retail partnership with Bealls to place select off-season inventory in stores across Florida, providing broader brand exposure and inventory flexibility. “It solves two problems at once—inventory management and awareness,” Melendez explains.

Looking ahead, the brand plans to expand its demographic reach, targeting young professionals and alumni aged 24 to 40, and aims to introduce women’s apparel by 2026. With ambitions to expand into the Southeast and Gulf Coast, Melendez envisions a future where Campus Course partners with 20 licensed universities in the next 18 to 24 months.

Conclusion

Rooted in the essence of college athletics, Campus Course is more than just a clothing brand; it’s a celebration of school pride that seamlessly integrates into everyday life. As Melendez puts it, “This brand is rooted in college. That foundation is what gives it room to grow.”
