Tampa Man Denied Bond in Road Rage Shooting of Local DJ

TAMPA, FL — In a shocking turn of events, Joel Moreno Cobo, the man charged with second-degree murder in a road rage incident, was denied bond during a pre-trial hearing on Monday. The case centers around the tragic shooting of Dedrick Sykes, known in Tampa’s nightlife as DJ Shy Guy, earlier this month.

The incident unfolded on the evening of November 14 near E 5th Ave. and N 22nd St. in Ybor City. According to the Tampa Police Department, a traffic dispute escalated when the two drivers exchanged heated words. Witnesses reported that moments later, gunfire erupted, striking Sykes. He was rushed to a local hospital but succumbed to his injuries shortly after.

Police recovered the firearm from Moreno Cobo’s waistband at the scene. During questioning, he claimed he felt threatened when Sykes exited his Jeep and approached his vehicle. Moreno Cobo stated that he had been waiting at a stop sign when he flashed his lights at an SUV blocking the intersection, which led to the confrontation.

Prosecutors argued that Moreno Cobo instigated the situation by honking his horn and flashing his lights. “He instigated this entire provocation,” said Scott Harmon, a prosecutor with the State Attorney’s Office. “There is no forcible felony that he’s defending himself against. The victim is completely unarmed.”

Detective Heather Donahue testified about the evidence collected, including witness statements that contradicted Moreno Cobo’s claims of feeling threatened. “He said that he didn’t know what the guy was going to do, but it wasn’t to give him a hug,” she remarked.

The defense contended that Moreno Cobo acted out of fear, asserting that the actions of Sykes getting out of his car were threatening. However, the judge expressed skepticism about whether those actions justified the use of deadly force, emphasizing the rapid escalation of the incident.

Adding to the complexity of the case, the state referenced a previous incident involving Moreno Cobo earlier this year, where he was involved in a confrontation that resulted in a bullet shattering a nearby business’s door. Although no charges were filed in that case, it contributed to the judge’s decision to deny bond.

As the legal proceedings continue, Moreno Cobo remains in custody. His attorney may file a motion for a Stand Your Ground hearing in the future, but for now, the community mourns the loss of DJ Shy Guy, a beloved figure in Tampa’s nightlife.

The case has sparked discussions about road rage and self-defense laws in Florida, raising questions about the balance between personal safety and the use of lethal force. As the investigation unfolds, the community watches closely, hoping for justice in this tragic incident.
