Tampa to Host ‘Stand Up for the First Amendment’ Event on May 3, 2025

TAMPA, FL – In a bold move to champion free speech and support local journalism, Tampa Heights bar Shuffle is set to host the “Stand Up for the First Amendment” event on Saturday, May 3, 2025. The grassroots initiative, spearheaded by local resident Joe Ragukas, aims to raise funds for several vital media organizations, including Creative Loafing Tampa Bay’s Tampa Bay Journalism Project, community radio station WMNF, La Gaceta, Florida Sentinel Bulletin, and PBS affiliate WEDU.

“This idea came from wanting to do something, anything. To not feel powerless against the assault on our rights and institutions,” Ragukas shared with Creative Loafing Tampa Bay. The event promises an engaging lineup featuring solo performances from local musicians Marc Ganancias and Henry Locke, along with comedic acts by Amanda Hoffman.

In addition to the entertainment, attendees will hear from notable speakers, including Tampa City Councilwoman Lynn Hurtak and Luis Salazar, President of the Hillsborough County LGBTQ Democratic Caucus. Historian Manny Leto will also shed light on the rich history of the press in Tampa.

The evening will be further enlivened by the Sunset Sundays DJs, including past Creative Loafing contributor Stephanie Powers and guest artist Chris Preston, who will spin tracks between performances.

Ragukas emphasized the importance of supporting local media, stating, “I want people to know that they are not alone and that we are stronger when we stand together. Courage is contagious, and we can still fight for what is right!”

The First Amendment, which guarantees freedoms concerning religion, expression, assembly, and the right to petition, has been under scrutiny in recent years. The ACLU highlights the critical role of a free press in holding the government accountable and fostering a vibrant marketplace of ideas.

With a suggested donation of $10, the “Stand Up for the First Amendment” event at Shuffle is not just a night of entertainment but a rallying cry for community solidarity and support for the press.

As Ragukas aptly puts it, “We can still fight for what is right!”
