Tampa Tops the Charts: Survey Reveals America’s Most Desirable Cities and States

ST. LOUIS, Aug. 6, 2024 — In a recent survey conducted by Clever Real Estate, Tampa has emerged as the most desirable city in the United States, while Florida has claimed the title of the most sought-after state. The survey, which polled 1,000 Americans, highlights shifting preferences in urban living and the factors that influence these choices.

Nearly one-fourth of respondents (23%) included Tampa in their top five cities to live in, marking a significant rise from its previous rankings—No. 10 in 2022 and No. 2 in 2023. This year, Tampa has firmly secured the top spot, reflecting its growing appeal among Americans.

Florida’s allure is further underscored by the presence of three cities in the top ten: Orlando at No. 5 and Miami at No. 10. A notable 35% of Americans identified Florida as one of their top five states to live in, surpassing California, which fell to second place with 28% of respondents.

The survey reveals that Americans prioritize low crime rates (68%), affordable housing and living costs (66%), and good weather (62%) when considering a desirable place to live. Conversely, high crime rates (73%), expensive housing (65%), and high taxes (62%) are significant deterrents.

Among the 50 most populous U.S. metros, the top ten most desirable cities are:

  1. Tampa, FL
  2. Charlotte, NC
  3. Virginia Beach, VA
  4. Nashville, TN
  5. Orlando, FL
  6. Raleigh, NC
  7. Atlanta, GA
  8. Denver, CO
  9. Las Vegas, NV
  10. Miami, FL

On the flip side, the survey identified the ten least desirable cities, with Washington, D.C. topping the list for the second consecutive year. A staggering 33% of Americans consider it one of the five worst cities to live in, a significant increase from 20% in 2023. Other cities in the bottom ten include New York, San Francisco, and Chicago.

The survey also highlights a divide in Americans’ sentiments about their current living situations. While 73% express satisfaction with where they live, a striking 84% say they could be convinced to move. Over half (59%) feel frustrated with their city or state, and 43% admit to feeling embarrassed by their state. However, financial constraints remain a barrier, with 50% stating they couldn’t afford to relocate to a more desirable location.

The most desirable states, according to the survey, are Florida, California, Texas, Hawaii, and New York, while the least desirable include California, New York, Alaska, Alabama, and Texas.

As Americans continue to weigh their options for the best places to call home, Tampa’s rise to the top may signal a broader trend towards warmer climates and urban environments that prioritize safety and affordability.
