Tampa Bay Braces for Historic Cold: Near-Record Temperatures Expected This Tuesday Morning

Tampa Bay Braces for Historic Cold Snap: Temperatures Expected to Plummet to 37 Degrees

TAMPA, Fla. — The Tampa Bay area is gearing up for an unprecedented chill this Tuesday morning, with the National Weather Service predicting temperatures to dip to a brisk 37 degrees. This forecast is just three degrees shy of the city’s record low for November 11, set back in 1892, making it a significant weather event for the region.

As residents prepare for this rare blast of November cold, forecasters warn that wind chills will make it feel even colder, prompting many locals to bundle up in layers. The US National Weather Service has described this cold snap as “pretty impressive,” urging residents to take precautions against the biting temperatures.

For many in the area, this sudden drop in temperature comes as a welcome relief after months of sweltering heat. Antonio Hernandez, a Tampa resident, expressed his excitement about the cooler weather. “Oh, I’m loving this. After this summer heat, I’m ready for the cooler weather,” he said with a laugh. “Probably going to go to the beach.”

However, while some embrace the chill, officials are advising caution, particularly for those using space heaters to stay warm. Lealman Fire Division Chief Jim Millican warned that older heater models without safety features can pose serious fire hazards. “It takes a split second when that thing’s heated up to get a curtain near it, or a drape near it, or even next to the bed or bedding or couch,” he cautioned. “Those things are super duper hot, and they will catch your house on fire immediately.”

To ensure safety, Millican recommends using newer heaters equipped with automatic shut-offs and keeping them away from flammable materials.

In response to the cold weather, Hillsborough County and neighboring areas have opened cold-weather shelters to provide warmth and resources for those in need. Residents can find a full list of shelter locations here.

Fortunately, this chilly weather is expected to be short-lived, with milder temperatures returning later in the week. For those looking to stay updated, hourly and daily forecasts are available here and here.

As Tampa Bay prepares for this historic cold snap, residents are reminded to stay warm, stay safe, and enjoy the brief taste of winter.
