Heightened Security Measures in Place for Gasparilla Festivities Following New Orleans Attack

TAMPA, Fla. — With the annual Gasparilla festivities just around the corner, Tampa City leaders and law enforcement partners are ramping up security measures to ensure the safety of the community in light of recent events.

Following the deadly terrorist attack in New Orleans on New Year’s Day, where 14 people were killed and dozens injured, Tampa Police Chief Lee Bercaw and FBI Assistant Special Agent in Charge Josh Delmanzo have pledged additional resources to keep Gasparilla attendees safe.

The Gasparilla celebrations kick off on January 18 with the Children’s Gasparilla Parade, followed by the Gasparilla Pirate Fest on January 25. In a meeting on Tuesday, local, state, and federal leaders discussed plans for a safe and secure event.

“We want to assure the entire Tampa community and all parade-goers that we have a comprehensive and vast safety plan in place,” said Police Chief Lee Bercaw.

Josh Delmanzo of the FBI Tampa division stated that the FBI will commit additional intelligence, technical, and response resources to bolster efforts in preserving public safety for Gasparilla. He also revealed that the suspect in the New Orleans attack had visited the Tampa area for three days last year.

“We’re exploring every lead to determine the reason for the visit. There’s no indication at this present time of any significant contact with persons in the area,” said Delmanzo.

Mayor Jane Castor encouraged people to sign up for text alerts by texting the word “Gasparilla” to 888-777. The City of Tampa’s website provides information on parade routes, parking, wet zones, and extra streetcar and bus services offered by HART throughout the season.

In a heartwarming story amidst the heightened security concerns, a Brooksville bride-to-be surprised her dying grandmother with a special wedding ceremony months before her actual wedding date. The gesture was a touching moment for the family, showcasing the love and bond between generations.

As the community prepares for Gasparilla, the focus remains on safety and unity, with officials working diligently to ensure a secure and enjoyable event for all attendees.
