Exciting Events and Updates in Tampa: From New Year’s Celebrations to Community Health Initiatives

Ring in the New Year with Fun (and Science!) at MOSI

TAMPA – This New Year’s Eve, the Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI) invites families to celebrate with a unique twist at its exciting event, “Quantum Countdown: Level Up to 2026.” Forget the traditional countdown to midnight; this celebration promises a day filled with science, games, and entertainment for all ages.

Taking place on Wednesday, December 31, from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., the event is sponsored by PNC Bank and will feature a variety of activities including video game creation stations, karaoke, science demonstrations, and captivating planetarium shows. Guests can enjoy two special “Noon Year’s Eve” countdowns at 12 p.m. and 3 p.m., with planetarium shows scheduled for 12:45 p.m. and 4 p.m.

“Quantum Countdown is designed to engage families in fun and educational ways,” said a MOSI representative. “We want everyone to experience the joy of science while celebrating the New Year.”

In addition to the countdowns and shows, attendees can participate in a scavenger hunt, dance to a DJ, and enjoy delicious food options. A silent auction will also be held, offering unique items for bidding.

Tickets are available for purchase at mosi.org, with advance booking highly recommended due to limited space. Admission is priced at $15 for children ages 3-17 and $20 for adults 18 and older. The planetarium show is an additional $10. MOSI members can attend for free or as part of their regular admission.

Pioneer Medical Foundation to Host Health Fair

TAMPA – The Pioneer Medical Foundation is set to host its Fifth Annual Community Health Fair on Saturday, January 10, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Water Works Park. This event aims to provide essential medical services and resources to underserved residents in the area.

“Designed around community needs, this health fair offers a one-stop opportunity for individuals to take their next steps with confidence,” said Ano Kashumba, APRN and executive director of the Pioneer Medical Foundation.

The fair will feature preventive health screenings, dental and mental health care, and personal care services. Attendees can also access an onsite pharmacy, food pantry, and job support services. Last year, nearly 200 community members benefited from services including dental extractions and health screenings.

This free event is open to the public, ensuring that everyone has access to vital health resources.


Hillsborough Ends Burn Ban

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY – Hillsborough County officials have announced the end of the countywide burn ban, effective December 15. Recent rainfall has reduced the risk associated with outdoor burning, allowing residents to resume outdoor activities safely.


Blair Underwood to Speak at Hillsborough College National Summit

TAMPA – Award-winning actor and director Blair Underwood will be the keynote speaker at the 19th Annual National “Believe. Build. Complete. Become.” (BBCB) Summit from March 4-7 at the Tampa Convention Center. Underwood will address attendees during the Dr. Sylvia Marion Carley luncheon on March 6.

The summit, hosted by Hillsborough College, aims to support Black and Latino males in their educational journeys while welcoming students from all backgrounds.


Fair Oaks Park Rec Center Opens

TAMPA – The new recreation center at Fair Oaks Park has officially opened its doors. This state-of-the-art facility features multipurpose rooms, an indoor basketball court, and dedicated spaces for seniors. The center is part of a larger $34.7 million project that will enhance the community with outdoor sports facilities and a hiking trail.


USF Awarded Funds from ALS Association

TAMPA – The University of South Florida has received a $20,000 grant from the ALS Association to support research at its ALS Certified Treatment Center of Excellence. This funding aims to enhance care for families affected by ALS, a condition projected to see a significant increase in cases over the next 15 years.


HC to Host Teens for Career Quest

TAMPA – Hillsborough College will welcome approximately 600 high school students for its annual Career Quest on December 5. The event will provide hands-on demonstrations and insights into various career paths, showcasing the college’s programs and student life.


Hillsborough Passes Emergency Burn Ban

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY – In response to warm temperatures and dry conditions, Hillsborough County has enacted an emergency ban on outdoor open burning. The ban includes restrictions on fireworks and fire pits, with exceptions for attended barbecues and specific agricultural practices.
