Newborn Monkey is Early Christmas Gift for ZooTampa

TAMPA, FL — Christmas has arrived early at ZooTampa at Lowry Park with the delightful birth of an Angolan colobus monkey on December 6. This joyful event marks the first birth of this species at the zoo since 2018, bringing a wave of excitement to both staff and visitors.

Zoo officials report that both the mother and her newborn are in good health. The baby, whose gender is yet to be determined, is already nursing and the mother is displaying all the appropriate maternal behaviors. Guests can catch a glimpse of the infant, distinguishable by its solid white fur, in the primates area. Over the coming months, the baby’s coat will transition to the striking black and white coloration characteristic of adult Angolan colobus monkeys.

Angolan colobus monkeys are classified as “Vulnerable” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, facing threats from habitat loss due to deforestation and agricultural expansion. The arrival of this new infant adds to the colobus troop, which now consists of six members: two adult males, three adult females, and the new baby.
