Tampa Hosts U.S. Conference of Mayors Amid Calls for Immigration Reform

TAMPA, FL — The annual U.S. Conference of Mayors kicked off this weekend in Tampa, drawing 179 mayors from across the nation to discuss pressing urban issues. Among the key topics on the agenda is a resolution urging federal authorities to prioritize the deportation of convicted criminals over undocumented individuals who contribute positively to their communities.

During a press conference at the Tampa Marriott Water Street, Columbus Mayor Andy Ginther, the conference’s sitting president, emphasized the need for a more humane approach to immigration enforcement. “We must focus on serious criminals, not hard-working individuals who have families, pay taxes, and contribute to their local communities,” he stated.

Resolution Highlights

The proposed resolution includes three main points:

  1. Clarification of the roles of local and federal officials in immigration enforcement.
  2. A call for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to concentrate on serious offenders rather than undocumented individuals.
  3. A request for federal authorities to notify local law enforcement before any planned ICE actions, ensuring operations are conducted in an orderly manner.

Fresno Mayor Jerry Dyer, who has extensive experience in law enforcement, echoed these sentiments, arguing that police must be seen as a supportive presence rather than an occupying force. “When trust is eroded, crime rises,” he warned, highlighting the importance of community trust in law enforcement.

Local Impact and Backlash

Tampa Mayor Jane Castor, who has a long history with the Tampa Police Department, reinforced the need for collaboration between local law enforcement and immigrant communities. “Local law enforcement should not be engaged in immigration enforcement,” she declared, stressing that fear of deportation can prevent victims from reporting crimes.

San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria shared his concerns about a recent ICE raid in his city, where agents aggressively detained workers at a local restaurant. “That lack of coordination puts everyone at risk,” he said, criticizing the federal approach to immigration enforcement.

A Call for Change

As the conference continues, mayors are expected to discuss the resolution further during the Criminal and Social Justice Committee meeting, with a vote scheduled for Sunday. The discussions come at a time when tensions surrounding immigration policies are high, particularly in light of recent federal actions that have sparked protests across the country.

Mayor Ginther emphasized the importance of peaceful assembly and the right to voice concerns, stating, “The federal government’s decision to deploy the National Guard to Los Angeles without consent is an unprecedented overstep.”

As the mayors gather to address these critical issues, the outcome of the proposed resolution could signal a shift in how cities across America approach immigration enforcement and community relations.
