María Bermúdez-Torres, president of THHI, expressed her pride in recognizing this year’s awardees, emphasizing their unwavering commitment and unique contributions. “Tampa Hispanic Heritage is dedicated to promoting Hispanic education and culture in the community,” said Bermúdez-Torres, a Puerto Rican native who has lived in the U.S. for over 40 years.

Among the honorees are Dr. Larissa Ruiz Baía, recognized for her impactful work in education, and Santos Morales, celebrated for his civic engagement efforts. Both have demonstrated exceptional dedication to enhancing the lives of those in their communities. Bermúdez-Torres also highlighted Felix Figueruelo, a business leader, and Viviam Sifontes, a healthcare advocate, whose efforts have left a lasting mark on Tampa.

The Leadership Class of 2024 spans eight categories, including education, pride, business, civic engagement, public service, arts, media, and health.

Dr. Baía, president of the Ybor City campus of Hillsborough Community College, has been instrumental in securing significant grants and developing student support programs. “She is of Dominican descent, raised in Puerto Rico, and greatly supports students in the Ybor City area,” Bermúdez-Torres noted.

In the pride category, Dr. Paige Niehaus, president of the Dale Mabry campus of HCC, has championed diversity and inclusion in higher education, particularly for the Hispanic community.

Félix Figueruelo, founder of DJ Felix Event Productions, received accolades in the business category for evolving his company into a comprehensive audiovisual solutions provider while dedicating himself to philanthropy.

Melisa Martínez, awarded in the public service category, has revitalized neighborhoods through her work with the Tampa Community Redevelopment Agency, promoting gender diversity in the construction industry.

In the arts category, percussionist Elisabeth Timbal has inspired many through her music, overcoming gender challenges in her profession. Venezuelan Carlos Bohórquez was honored in the media category for his significant impact on the Hispanic community through radio, television, and event production.

Viviam Sifontes, founder of Latinos Unidos por un Nuevo Amanecer, was recognized in the health category for her dedication to supporting Latino individuals affected by cancer, drawing from her personal experience as a cancer survivor.

A Legacy of Celebration

Founded in 1979, Tampa Hispanic Heritage has been a cornerstone in promoting and celebrating Hispanic culture in the Tampa Bay area. The organization hosts a variety of events each year, generating significant community participation and fostering a sense of unity among Hispanic groups.

Bermúdez-Torres reflected on the organization’s mission: “We aim to promote our culture, safeguard it, and celebrate the vast Hispanic heritage in the Tampa Bay area.” The annual celebration has evolved from its humble beginnings in 1975, growing into a vibrant 90-day festival that showcases the richness of Hispanic traditions.

Encouraging Community Involvement

Bermúdez-Torres encourages community members to engage with local organizations and seek out resources available to them. “It’s essential that we support each other and take advantage of available opportunities to achieve our dreams,” she said, emphasizing the importance of education as a tool for overcoming challenges.

She also addressed the barriers many face, including language obstacles and misinformation, urging individuals to ask questions and seek help. “We must make ourselves noticed, show our talents, and not isolate ourselves,” she added.

As the Tampa Hispanic Heritage prepares for its upcoming events, including the annual Gala honoring the Hispanic Woman and Man of the Year, the organization continues to inspire and uplift the community, fostering a legacy of leadership and cultural pride.
