Program in Tampa Provides Fresh, Healthy Foods to Underserved Neighborhoods
TAMPA, Fla. – A groundbreaking program in Tampa is revolutionizing the way underserved neighborhoods access fresh, healthy foods. The Tampa Well Food Pharmacy and Community Garden is providing free fruits and vegetables to families in need, with the goal of improving overall health and wellness in the community.
One participant, Herman Dallas, shared his transformative experience with the program. “My eating habits were terrible before I joined this program. I’ve learned so much about nutrition and how to grow my own foods. It’s been an amazing experience,” Dallas said.
The initiative is a collaborative effort between Tampa General Hospital, The City of Tampa, Feeding Tampa Bay, and the YMCA. Project Manager Rachel Bozich emphasized the importance of educating the community on the benefits of fresh produce. “We saw this as an opportunity to support our community and provide greater access to healthy foods like fruits and vegetables,” Bozich stated.
Jenise Carr, the Food Pharmacy Community Garden Manager, highlighted the impact of the program on participants. “For six months, every week they’re able to come in and get those fresh fruits and vegetables and also shelf-stable, healthier items,” Carr explained.
Participants like Felecia Johnson have seen significant improvements in their health and well-being. “I don’t have to go to the grocery store and spend an astronomical amount of money for fresh fruits and vegetables to eat healthy,” Johnson shared.
The program, which launched earlier this year, is already making a significant impact on the Tampa community. By providing access to nutritious foods and promoting healthy eating habits, the Tampa Well Food Pharmacy and Community Garden is helping residents lead healthier and more fulfilling lives.
