Turning Heartbreak into Hope: A Family’s Journey of Love and Organ Donation

Family Transforms Heartbreak into Hope Through Organ Donation

BRANDON, Fla. — In a heart-wrenching journey marked by love and resilience, Andrew Ford and Catherine Mornhineway faced an unimaginable challenge when a 14-week ultrasound revealed that their unborn daughter, Haven, had anencephaly—a rare congenital condition where a baby does not fully develop a brain. Doctors informed the couple that the condition was not compatible with life, and many parents in similar situations choose to terminate the pregnancy. However, Ford and Mornhineway made a courageous decision to carry Haven to term, driven by a desire to donate her organs and tissue to help others in need.

Anencephaly occurs in approximately 1 in 1,000 pregnancies in the United States, but only about 1 in 10,000 are carried to term. After learning of Haven’s diagnosis, Mornhineway sought out stories from other families who had faced similar circumstances. Inspired by a storyline from Grey’s Anatomy about organ donation, she and Ford decided to give their daughter a chance to make a difference.

While driving through Winter Haven, the couple chose the name “Haven,” symbolizing a “safe harbor” and a “light in the dark.” “Even with the little bit of time we got with her, we just wouldn’t trade any of it,” Ford reflected.

On the day of Haven’s delivery at HCA Florida Brandon Hospital, the family cherished every moment with her. When it came time for organ donation, hospital staff lined the hallways for an honor walk—a tribute recognizing Haven’s life and the lives she would save. “I just couldn’t think of a more beautiful way to say goodbye,” Ford said, as Haven passed away peacefully on his chest, surrounded by her parents and loved ones.

Haven’s heart valves were donated to help other babies survive, while her birth tissue donations are expected to assist patients suffering from serious wounds. “What a remarkable family,” said Sherri Day, public affairs manager at LifeLink Foundation, highlighting the rarity of such selfless acts.

The couple hopes that Haven’s story will inspire more families to consider organ donation, demonstrating how compassion and purpose can emerge even in profound loss. “Her heart will beat on in the lives she saves,” a family member shared, emphasizing the legacy of love that will endure through Haven’s contributions.

As they navigate their grief, Ford and Mornhineway find solace in knowing that their daughter’s legacy will live on, bringing hope to others in need.
