Tampa Leaders Enhance Security Measures Ahead of Gasparilla Festivities Following New Orleans Attack

TAMPA, Fla. — In the wake of a tragic New Year’s Day attack in New Orleans that left 14 dead and dozens injured, Tampa city officials and law enforcement agencies are ramping up security measures to ensure the safety of residents and visitors during the upcoming Gasparilla festivities.

The annual Gasparilla celebrations kick off on January 18 with the Children’s Gasparilla Parade, followed by the highly anticipated Gasparilla Pirate Fest on January 25. Local, state, and federal leaders convened on Tuesday to outline a comprehensive safety plan aimed at safeguarding the community during these popular events.

“We want to assure the entire Tampa community and all parade-goers that we have a comprehensive and vast safety plan in place,” said Police Chief Lee Bercaw. His commitment to public safety comes as the city prepares for one of its largest annual celebrations.

The heightened security focus follows a shocking incident in New Orleans, where an individual drove a pickup truck into a crowd on Bourbon Street, prompting fears of similar threats in other cities. In response, the FBI’s Tampa division is deploying additional resources to bolster security efforts for Gasparilla.

Josh Delmanzo, assistant special agent in charge of the joint terrorism task force, emphasized the FBI’s commitment to public safety. “We will commit additional intelligence, technical, and response resources to help preserve public safety for the Gasparilla parades and festivities,” he stated.

Delmanzo also revealed that the suspect in the New Orleans attack had visited the Tampa area for three days last October. “We’re exploring every lead to determine the reason for the visit. There’s no indication at this present time of any significant contact with persons in the area,” he added, urging anyone with information to contact the FBI.

Chief Bercaw reassured the public, stating, “We are not aware of any threats at this time, but we are working closely with the FBI.” He encouraged community members to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.

Mayor Jane Castor also urged residents to stay informed by signing up for text alerts by texting “Gasparilla” to 888-777. She provided practical safety tips for families attending the events, including taking a recent photo of children to assist law enforcement in case they get lost.

For detailed information on parade routes, parking, and additional transportation services, residents can visit the City of Tampa’s website.

As Tampa gears up for the festivities, city leaders remain committed to ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all participants, reinforcing the message that community safety is a top priority.
