Baker Mayfield: A Bargain for the Buccaneers? Insights on His Contract and Performance

Baker Mayfield: The Underpaid Star of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers

In a surprising twist of fate, Baker Mayfield, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ quarterback, has emerged as one of the most underpaid players in the NFL, according to NFL.com writer Tom Blair. Signed to a three-year, $100 million contract last offseason, Mayfield’s performance in his first season has many questioning whether he deserves a pay raise.

Blair argues that Mayfield’s current average annual salary of $33.33 million is significantly lower than that of other quarterbacks, including Sam Darnold, Geno Smith, and Kirk Cousins. In fact, it’s roughly $20 million less than what rising stars like Tua Tagovailoa, Jared Goff, and Brock Purdy are earning.

During the 2024 season, Mayfield showcased his talent by throwing for over 4,500 yards and tying for second-most touchdown passes in the league with 41, just behind Joe Burrow. "He undoubtedly should make more than $33.33 million per year," Blair stated, emphasizing that Mayfield’s current contract is a "jaw-dropping discount" for the Buccaneers.

As the 30-year-old quarterback continues to excel, the Bucs may need to consider negotiating a contract extension as early as next summer. With his impressive contributions, Mayfield has proven to be everything the team needs—and more.

If he maintains his performance into the 2025 season, the Buccaneers risk losing him to free agency in 2027, making it crucial to secure his future with the team.
