Tampa Bay Rays Confirm Sale Talks with New Ownership Group
Tampa Bay Rays Confirm Talks for Potential Sale Amid Community Concerns
TAMPA, Fla. — In a significant development for baseball fans in the region, the Tampa Bay Rays have confirmed they are in exclusive discussions regarding the potential sale of the team. The talks involve a group led by Jacksonville-based home developer Patrick Zalupski, alongside notable investors including Bill Cosgrove and Ken Babby.
The announcement comes on the heels of a failed stadium deal in St. Petersburg earlier this year, which had intensified speculation about current owner Stu Sternberg’s future with the franchise. While the Rays have not provided further comments during these discussions, the news has sparked a mix of hope and concern among fans and local officials alike.
Zalupski, who is the Founder, President, and CEO of Dream Finders Homes, is at the forefront of the potential acquisition. His involvement has raised questions about the future direction of the team, particularly regarding its location.
Local business owner Mark Ferguson, who runs Ferg’s Sports Bar and Grill in St. Petersburg, expressed optimism about the team’s future. “Hopefully, he’ll keep them right here in St. Pete and develop all the land like Stu had a chance to do,” Ferguson said. He emphasized the advantages of building a new stadium in the area, citing the availability of developed land nearby.
Fans have echoed similar sentiments, with many expressing a desire for the team to remain in St. Petersburg. “I really don’t care who owns them as long as they stay here in St. Pete and help the community,” said fan Hank Brautigam. Another fan, Josh Christie, added, “If it sells, it should stay here in Tampa, St. Pete. Everyone loves this team.”
Mayor Jane Castor weighed in on the discussions, stating, “The Tampa Bay Rays are part of this community, and we want them to stay right here in Tampa Bay.” She expressed optimism that any new ownership would recognize the passion of the fans and the importance of keeping the team rooted in the community.
Pinellas County Commissioner Chris Latvala, a vocal advocate for the team’s local presence, remarked, “I think today’s news is definitely good news for Rays fans in the Tampa Bay area. The likelihood of the Rays staying in the area goes up exponentially with today’s news.”
As the discussions progress, the future of the Tampa Bay Rays remains uncertain, but one thing is clear: the community is rallying behind the hope that their beloved team will continue to call St. Petersburg home.
