Florida Panthers and Tampa Bay Lightning Set to Host Outdoor Games in 2025-26 Season
The NHL is making waves in the southern United States as reports indicate that both the Florida Panthers and the Tampa Bay Lightning are set to host outdoor games in the upcoming seasons.
According to Elliotte Friedman on the 32 Thoughts Podcast, the Lightning are on track to host their own outdoor game, following in the footsteps of the Panthers who were previously reported to host one during the 2025-26 season.
While the two Florida-based teams have a heated rivalry, they will not be facing off against each other in these outdoor games. Instead, other teams will be involved, marking a significant milestone for outdoor games in warm weather climates.
The Panthers are expected to host their outdoor game at LoanDepot Park, home of the Miami Marlins, while the Lightning are likely to host the Winter Classic at Raymond James Stadium, home of the NFL’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
This would be a historic moment for the NHL as Florida would easily become the southern-most location to host outdoor games. The Panthers would have the advantage of a roof at LoanDepot Park if needed, while Raymond James Stadium, without a roof, has hosted multiple major events in the past.
The Lightning have previously played in an outdoor game, defeating the Nashville Predators in 2022. With these upcoming outdoor games, the Panthers, Utah Hockey Club (formerly the Arizona Coyotes), and Columbus Blue Jackets are the last teams in the NHL to not have played in an outdoor game.
Fans can look forward to these exciting outdoor games in Florida, as the NHL continues to expand its reach and bring the excitement of outdoor hockey to new locations.
