Tampa Bay Lightning Honors Army Reserve Combat Medic and USF Alumnus during “Salute to Service” Observance
The Tampa Bay Lightning and USAA recently honored Army Reserve Sgt. 1st Class Ryan Cobin, a combat medic and University of South Florida alum, during a special “Salute to Service” event at a game against the Boston Bruins. Cobin, who has served in the military for over two decades, expressed his excitement at being recognized for his Army and USF experiences. Growing up as a fan of the Tampa Bay Lightning, Cobin shared his love for hockey and his time at USF, calling the opportunity to merge the two a unique and interesting experience.
The event, sponsored by USAA, was part of the ongoing “Salute to Service” observances by the Tampa Bay Lightning, which began in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 attacks. Cobin, who initially studied biology and biomedical services at USF before enlisting in the Army, served in combat tours with the 82nd Airborne Division and the 173rd Airborne Brigade. He later returned to complete his undergraduate studies and earn a Master of Science degree in osteopathic medicine.
During the game, Cobin received a warm reception from the arena audience, with cheers and chants of support filling the air. The Tampa Bay Lightning regularly honors military personnel and their families, as well as other branches of the armed forces, as part of their game presentations. John Franzone, the team’s senior vice president for game presentation, expressed gratitude for the sacrifices made by military personnel and their families, emphasizing the importance of recognizing and appreciating their service.
Overall, the event was a touching tribute to Cobin’s dedication to both his country and his education, highlighting the strong support from the Tampa Bay community for the military and its veterans. The Tampa Bay Lightning’s ongoing commitment to honoring service members serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by those who serve in the armed forces.
