Community Outrage Following Violent Attack on Peace March in Boulder, Colorado

Hillsborough, Fla. — Community Reacts to Boulder Attack: A Call for Unity Against Hate

A peaceful demonstration in Boulder, Colorado, turned into a scene of chaos and violence when 45-year-old Mohamed Soliman allegedly attacked a pro-Israel group with makeshift explosives, including Molotov cocktails. The incident has sent shockwaves through the Tampa Bay area, prompting local leaders and residents to voice their outrage and concern over rising hate crimes.

Soliman has been charged with a federal hate crime, facing 16 counts of attempted murder for his actions during the march advocating for the release of hostages. The attack left 12 individuals injured, including a Holocaust survivor, igniting a fierce dialogue about the alarming rise of anti-Semitic violence in the United States.

Eric Stillman, President and CEO of the Florida Holocaust Museum, expressed his deep distress over the incident. “It was like a punch in the gut,” he said. “This is such a horrible crime.” Stillman, who recently witnessed the aftermath of violence against Israeli embassy staff in Washington, D.C., emphasized the urgent need for collective action against domestic extremism. “We as Americans must band together and cannot tolerate the dehumanization of any group of people,” he stated.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) also condemned the attack, labeling it a “heinous and unacceptable crime.” Hiba Rahim, deputy executive director of CAIR-Florida, reiterated that Muslims do not condone violence against innocent individuals. She highlighted the broader implications of such acts, noting that many Palestinian Muslims, including those in Tampa Bay, have been affected by the ongoing conflict.

Authorities revealed that Soliman, who was denied a gun purchase due to his immigration status, resorted to creating explosives himself. His bond has been set at $10 million, with a court appearance scheduled for Thursday.

As the Tampa Bay community grapples with the implications of this attack, leaders are calling for unity and a renewed commitment to combat hate in all its forms. “Acts of violence like this are not just attacks on individuals; they are attacks on our shared humanity,” Stillman concluded.

In the wake of this tragedy, the community is reminded of the importance of standing together against hate and violence, fostering an environment of understanding and respect for all.
