Growing Together: Exploring Community Gardens in Tampa Bay with the Coalition of Community Gardens
Tampa Bay Community Gardens: Cultivating Connections and Sustainability
TAMPA BAY, FL – In a vibrant discussion on the Sustainable Living Show, hosts Anni and Tanja welcomed guests Kitty Wallace, Nate Farley, and Meryl Stout from the Coalition of Community Gardens to explore the flourishing world of community gardening in the Tampa Bay area.
The conversation kicked off with Kitty Wallace, a retired special education teacher, who shared her family’s deep-rooted gardening tradition. “Gardening has always been a part of our lives,” she said, reflecting on how she and her husband Roger instilled this passion in their three children. Kitty’s journey took a pivotal turn in 2010 when she joined forces with the Tampa Garden Club and local community leaders, including Lena Young Green, to establish Tampa’s first community garden in Tampa Heights.
Nate Farley, an Urban Agriculture Specialist, emphasized the importance of education in community gardening. “We’re excited to introduce new classes that will empower residents to grow their own food and understand sustainable practices,” he noted, highlighting the role of community gardens in fostering food security.
Meryl Stout, who moved to Tampa Heights in 2012, shared her personal connection to gardening. “As a child, I was enchanted by my neighbor’s magical garden. Now, I’m thrilled to be part of a movement that not only beautifies our neighborhoods but also addresses food deserts and insecurity,” she said, expressing her long-held dream of working for a non-profit focused on sustainable living.
Together, these passionate individuals formed the Coalition of Community Gardens, a network dedicated to sharing resources, building infrastructure, and advocating for policies that promote health and wellness through gardening. Their mission is clear: to cultivate a sense of community while addressing critical issues like food access.
The discussion also touched on the upcoming Tampa Bay Community Garden Tour, an event designed to showcase local gardens and inspire residents to get involved. “Being part of a community garden not only provides fresh produce but also fosters connections among neighbors,” Kitty explained.
Listeners were encouraged to visit the Coalition’s website for more information on community gardens and to secure tickets for the tour. “It takes a community to build a community,” Anni reminded everyone, reinforcing the idea that collective efforts can lead to meaningful change.
