Celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day with Events Across Tampa Bay: Parades, Festivals, and Community Gatherings from Jan. 16-19

Tampa Bay Gears Up for a Vibrant Celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Tampa Bay, FL — This January, the Tampa Bay area will come alive with a series of parades, festivals, and gatherings honoring the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The celebrations, spanning seven counties, will take place from January 16 to January 19, culminating on the federal holiday observed on the third Monday of January.

In Hillsborough County, the festivities kick off with the highly anticipated Tampa MLK Day Parade, set to begin at noon on January 19 from Cuscaden Park. The parade promises to be a vibrant display of community spirit, featuring the Edward Waters University Triple Threat Marching Band among its participants. Additionally, Plant City will host a week-long event at the Sadye Gibbs Martin Community Center, featuring a lineup of speakers, musicians, and artists from January 16 through January 19.

As the holiday approaches, three parades are scheduled for January 17. Polk County will celebrate its 48th Annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Parade at 1 p.m. in downtown Lakeland, while Winter Haven hosts its 47th Annual Commemorative Parade from 10 a.m. to noon along M.L.K. Boulevard NE. Meanwhile, Pasco County will hold its own parade from 10 a.m. to noon in downtown Dade City, with Coach Willie Broner serving as Grand Marshal.

Pinellas County is set to host three celebrations on January 19. The St. Pete MLK Parade will run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. through downtown St. Petersburg, while Clearwater kicks off the day with a breakfast at North Greenwood Recreation Center at 8 a.m., followed by a march and programming.

Sarasota County will also be bustling with activities from January 16 to January 19. The Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe will present “Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.: Celebrating His Legacy in Spoken Word and Song” at 7:30 p.m. on January 18 at the Sarasota Opera House. The celebrations will conclude with a Memorial Breakfast and Community Awards ceremony at 7:30 p.m. on January 19 at the Robert L. Taylor Community Complex.

In Hernando County, the 15th Annual MLK Car Show will take place on January 18 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the fairgrounds, with a $20 entry fee for spectators and $40 for car entries. Children aged 12 and under can attend for free. Manatee County will also join in the festivities with a parade beginning at noon on January 17 at the Palmetto Youth Center, themed “Mission Possible: Empowering our youth to dream big, act boldly, and be part of the solution.”

As the community comes together to honor Dr. King’s enduring legacy, government offices, facilities, and schools throughout Tampa Bay will close on January 19, reopening on January 20. This week of celebration not only pays tribute to a pivotal figure in American history but also fosters unity and reflection within the community.
