Buccaneers Overcome Injuries to Start Season Strong at 4-1, Sign RB Owen Wright to Practice Squad
Tampa Bay Buccaneers Overcome Injuries to Start Season Strong at 4-1
Despite facing a barrage of injuries at the start of the season, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have surged to a commendable 4-1 record, highlighted by a decisive victory over the Seattle Seahawks in Week 5. As they prepare for another crucial NFC matchup against the San Francisco 49ers, the Buccaneers are making strategic moves to bolster their roster.
In a recent announcement, the Buccaneers confirmed the signing of running back Owen Wright to their practice squad, a familiar face who previously showcased his skills during training camp. To accommodate Wright, the team released guard Sua Opeta, marking a significant shift in their roster management as they navigate the challenges of the season.
Wright, who split his collegiate career between Monmouth and William & Mary, went undrafted and spent time on the Baltimore Ravens’ practice squad before joining the Buccaneers. During the preseason, he made a notable impression, rushing for a team-high 100 yards and a touchdown across three games, along with contributing in the passing game and on special teams.
The Buccaneers are currently grappling with the absence of star running back Bucky Irving, who is sidelined with foot and shoulder injuries. This has prompted the team to reinforce their running back depth, with Rachaad White, Sean Tucker, and Josh Williams remaining on the active roster. Wright’s addition to the practice squad is a strategic move to fill the gap left by Irving’s injury.
Opeta, a six-year veteran, initially joined the Buccaneers as a free agent in 2024 but faced setbacks due to injuries. After a stint on injured reserve, he returned to the team but was ultimately released to make way for Wright.
As the Buccaneers gear up for their upcoming clash with the 49ers, the team remains focused on maintaining their momentum despite the ongoing roster adjustments. Coach Todd Bowles and his staff are optimistic that the depth and resilience of the squad will continue to shine through as they aim for a strong finish to the season.
