TAMPA, FL – In a heartfelt farewell that resonated throughout the Tampa Bay area, beloved journalist Rod Carter has officially signed off from WFLA News Channel 8 after more than two decades of dedicated service. The esteemed anchor is set to begin a new chapter in Raleigh, North Carolina, where he has accepted a position at WNCN-CBS 17.

Carter, who has been a familiar face in Tampa homes, expressed his excitement for the new opportunity while reflecting on the community he’s leaving behind. “I’m super excited about this next chapter, but will definitely miss my family here in Tampa,” he tweeted on February 28. “But thanks to the power of Zoom, I’ll always be around.”

A Day of Celebration

In recognition of his contributions, the City of Tampa honored Carter with a special sendoff on March 12, declaring it “Rod Carter Day.” Mayor Jane Castor took to social media to celebrate the anchor’s legacy, stating, “It’s not every day we get to celebrate a gem like Rod. He has kept Tampa residents informed for over two decades as an exceptional journalist and true talent.”

Former Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn also shared his well-wishes, reminiscing about Carter’s vibrant presence in the community. “Been a great ride, Rod. What are they going to do without your singing at Beulah Baptist? All the best, my friend. Thanks for telling Tampa’s stories so well.”

A Legacy of Community Engagement

Beyond his role as a news anchor, Carter has been deeply involved in the Tampa community. A proud graduate of Florida A&M University (FAMU), he has served on the board of the Crisis Center of Tampa Bay and the Community Leadership Board of the American Diabetes Association. His commitment to mentorship is evident through his work with aspiring journalists, including leading the NABJ-FAMU Journalism Short Course and participating in programs at the University of South Florida.

Carter’s leadership extends to his involvement with the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ), where he currently serves as the Region III director. His dedication to the field has earned him accolades, including the Kappa Tau Alpha Hall of Fame Award from USF’s Zimmerman School of Advertising and Mass Communications.

A Fond Farewell

As Rod Carter prepares for his new role in North Carolina, the Tampa Bay community reflects on the indelible mark he has left. His passion for journalism, commitment to community service, and ability to connect with viewers have made him a cherished figure in the region.

While Tampa bids farewell to one of its most beloved anchors, Carter’s legacy will undoubtedly continue to inspire both seasoned journalists and the next generation of storytellers. As he embarks on this new journey, the community wishes him all the best in his future endeavors.
