Tragic Crash in Ybor City: Four Dead and Thirteen Injured After Car Slams into Bar

Tragedy Strikes Ybor City: Four Dead, Thirteen Injured in Bar Crash

YBOR CITY, Fla. — A night of revelry turned to tragedy early Saturday morning when a speeding car crashed into Bradley’s, a popular bar on 7th Avenue, claiming the lives of four individuals and injuring 13 others, according to Tampa police.

The alleged driver, 22-year-old Silas Sampson, was reportedly speeding before losing control of his vehicle and plowing into the bar’s patio, where many patrons were gathered. Witnesses described a scene of chaos as tables and chairs were sent flying, leaving the community in shock.

Tampa Police Chief Lee Bercaw expressed his sorrow over the incident, stating, “All the victims were over 20, out in Ybor, having a good time, expecting to go home safely. A careless, reckless driver took everybody’s lives in his hands.” Three victims died at the scene, while one succumbed to injuries at the hospital.

The crash occurred around 12:45 a.m. after police observed a speeding vehicle on I-275. Authorities attempted a pit maneuver to stop the car but disengaged due to safety concerns as it approached the busy bar area. Moments later, the driver lost control, leading to the devastating crash.

Bradley Nelson, the owner of Bradley’s, expressed his condolences to the victims’ families and announced that the bar would remain closed on Sunday out of respect for those affected. “We ask you to remember all those killed and injured in your prayers, as we do the same,” he said.

Tampa Mayor Jane Castor also shared her condolences, stating, “What happened in Ybor last night was devastating. Families are grieving, first responders are hurting, and our city feels this loss.” She emphasized the city’s commitment to safety as the investigation continues.

Witness Howard Hopkins, who was nearby when the crash occurred, recounted the harrowing moment. “It was coming so fast, I was just in shock,” he said. “It was a full patio. The tables went flying and chairs were flying; it was pretty bad.”

As the community grapples with this tragedy, many are calling for increased safety measures in the vibrant nightlife district. Ybor resident Eric Ebuen remarked, “We want to see Ybor City shown in its best. So, this is the type of attention we don’t want to see.”

Sampson was taken into custody at the scene and is facing charges of vehicular homicide, with additional felony charges expected as the investigation unfolds.

As the sun rises over Ybor City, the community mourns the loss of life and reflects on the fragility of a night meant for celebration.
