Rare Winter Storm Brings Snow and Ice to Northern Florida and Frigid Rain to Tampa Bay

A rare winter storm is wreaking havoc across the United States, including the Gulf Coast, bringing snow and ice to unexpected places like northern Florida and Tampa Bay. Snow flurries began falling in northern Florida, with Pensacola seeing snow accumulate on the state welcome sign. Traffic cams along Interstate 10 showed trucks navigating icy roads, a sight unfamiliar to many Florida drivers.

The storm, part of a larger system moving through Texas and the northern Gulf Coast, has prompted blizzard warnings in southeast Texas and southwest Louisiana. A cold weather advisory is in effect for central Florida, with wind chills as low as 25 degrees expected. Snow and sleet accumulations of up to 4 inches are forecasted for the Panhandle and northern areas of the state.

In Pensacola, around 2.5 inches of snow had already fallen, creating hazardous driving conditions. Schools in Tallahassee, including Florida State University, canceled classes, and state lawmakers canceled meetings. Emergency officials urged Floridians to stay off the roads as ice accumulations could make driving treacherous.

Governors in several Gulf states, including Florida’s Ron DeSantis, declared a state of emergency ahead of the storm. DeSantis warned residents to prepare for significant snowfall, with some areas possibly seeing up to 6 inches, breaking state records. De-icing chemicals are being distributed on roadways, and snow plows have been mobilized to clear the snow.

The storm is expected to bring heavy snow, sleet, and freezing rain to the Deep South as Arctic air grips the eastern U.S. Tampa Bay is experiencing cold weather and showers, with temperatures expected to remain chilly through the week. Cold weather shelters have been opened in Pinellas and Hillsborough counties to provide refuge for those in need.

Nearly 2,000 flights were canceled within the U.S. on Tuesday, with delays affecting thousands more. The blizzard warning in effect for parts of the Gulf South is a historic event, with snowfall not seen on this scale in decades. Forecasters warned of sub-freezing temperatures threatening vegetation and plumbing in unaccustomed areas.

President Trump altered his inauguration plans due to the cold weather, taking the oath indoors instead of the planned outdoor ceremony. The storm is expected to leave a lasting impact on the region, with memories of this historic event likely to endure for years to come.
