Tampa Senior Living Facility Files for Bankruptcy, Forcing Residents to Find New Homes

The closure of Unisen Senior Living in Tampa has left more than 100 residents in a state of uncertainty as they are forced to find new places to live. The facility, previously known as University Village, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection last week, sparking concerns among residents and state regulators.

The site’s previous owners were accused of fraudulent behavior, including filing false information and failing to pay millions of dollars in refunds to residents. After the bankruptcy filing, the facility’s not-for-profit owner, Tampa Life Plan Village Inc., stated that only 106 of its 491 units are currently occupied, making it unsustainable to continue operations.

Residents, including retired local leaders, lawyers, and professors, are mourning the loss of their longtime community. The new management at Unisen Senior Living has been transparent and is working to assist residents in finding new living arrangements.

The bankruptcy filing shows that some of the company’s largest creditors are residents themselves, who are owed significant amounts of money. While the company plans to spend between $10,000 and $30,000 on each resident to help with relocation, it remains unclear whether all residents will receive their money back.

This closure marks the first time a continuing care retirement community in Florida has forced residents to move due to bankruptcy. The Florida Life Care Residents Association is advocating for the affected residents and is working to ensure their protection during this challenging time.
