Thursday Weather Forecast: Heavy Rain and Storms Expected in Tampa Bay Area

Tampa Bay Braces for Heavy Rain as Tropical Moisture Moves In

TAMPA, Fla. — Residents of the Tampa Bay area should prepare for a potentially stormy Thursday, as deep tropical moisture is set to bring increased rain and thunderstorms, particularly during the evening hours.

According to FOX 13 Meteorologist Dave Osterberg, rain coverage is expected to rise to between 60-70% throughout the day. “Much of the wet weather will arrive later in the evening and into the night,” Osterberg warned, emphasizing that heavy rain and storms could pose challenges for evening commuters.

Osterberg explained that while tropical activity is on the rise, the moisture affecting Tampa Bay is not linked to any tropical system. “There’s a lot of deep tropical moisture over the Bahamas, and that moisture is going to move our way,” he said. “Our cup is full, and we’re just going to add more water to that same full cup, leading to overflow in the form of rainfall.”

The forecast indicates that rain chances will remain elevated at around 70% through Saturday, with a gradual decrease expected next week. Residents are advised to stay alert as the wet weather continues.

In addition to local rain forecasts, the National Hurricane Center is monitoring several areas in the Atlantic for potential development. Currently, Tropical Storm Dexter is moving east-northeast over open waters, posing no threat to land. Meanwhile, an area known as Invest 96L has a 60% chance of developing over the next week, but is also expected to remain well out of reach of the U.S.

Osterberg reassured residents that even if a weak area of low pressure off the southeastern U.S. coast develops, it is unlikely to pose any immediate threat. “It’s probably not going to happen until it’s well east of the Carolinas and north of Bermuda,” he noted.

As the Tampa Bay area prepares for a rainy Thursday, residents are encouraged to stay updated on weather conditions and plan accordingly for the possibility of heavy rainfall and storms.

Stay safe and dry, Tampa!
