Florida Ranks Second in Financial Distress: A Deep Dive into Rising Credit Card Debt and Its Impact on Families
Florida Faces Rising Credit Card Debt: A Struggle for Many Families
HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. — A recent report from WalletHub has unveiled a troubling trend in the Sunshine State: Florida now ranks as the second most financially distressed state in the nation, primarily due to soaring credit card debt. As part of our ongoing Price of Paradise series, we aim to shed light on the high cost of living that many families in our area are grappling with.
Brandy Lynn Culpo, a single mother of five, shared her story with ABC Action News, highlighting the overwhelming burden of monthly expenses. “Mortgage or rent, electric, water, internet, phone—especially with children, you cannot live without those,” she explained. Culpo works tirelessly cleaning rental homes across the Tampa Bay area, but often finds that her paycheck doesn’t stretch far enough to cover all her bills.
“The rise in costs for necessities without a corresponding rise in pay makes it a struggle sometimes,” she lamented.
WalletHub’s report indicates that many Floridians are increasingly relying on credit cards to manage everyday expenses. Chris Lupo from WalletHub noted, “People are using credit cards more frequently, often unaware that the average interest rate is between 22 to 23 percent.” This reality hits home for Culpo, who admits to turning to her credit card when unexpected expenses arise. “If you fall short on your check and your electric bill is $40 or $50 over budget, you look to your credit card. Eventually, it stacks up,” she said.
Once that debt accumulates, it can feel insurmountable. Lupo advises careful budgeting as a way to regain control. “Cut out non-essentials and direct any bonus money towards your debt,” he suggested.
For those struggling to manage their finances, help is available. The University of Florida IFAS Extension offers free one-on-one financial assistance through its Master Money Mentors program, providing valuable resources for budgeting and debt management.
As families like Culpo’s navigate these challenging financial waters, it’s clear that the issue of credit card debt is not just a statistic—it’s a reality affecting lives across Florida.
