Tampa Pride Diversity Parade Celebrates LGBTQ+ Community Leaders and Families

The Tampa Pride Diversity Parade is set to kick off this Saturday, March 23, at 4 p.m., and the excitement is building as the community prepares to celebrate diversity and inclusion. Leading up to the parade, ABC Action News had the opportunity to speak with some of the grand marshals who have made a significant impact on the LGBTQ+ community in Tampa.

Former Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn, known as the “Trailblazer” for Tampa Pride 2024, played a pivotal role in the launch of Tampa Pride a decade ago. Reflecting on the beginnings of the parade, Buckhorn shared, “It was about 10 years ago when the parade had stopped occurring for a long time. The organizers came to my office and asked whether the city would be willing to be a participant, sponsor, and be heavily involved. For me, it was a no-brainer. We are a city that celebrates diversity, and we want everyone to feel welcome.”

Dr. Gary Howell, a Grand Marshal for Tampa Pride 2024, is a psychologist in the Tampa Bay area dedicated to supporting the mental health of the LGBTQ+ community, with a focus on trans youth and the increasing number of hate crimes targeting the community.

Dustin and Daniel Johnson, this year’s Grand Couple, have made a significant impact by adopting six children to keep siblings together and adding another baby to their family. They aim to be a shining example of LGBTQ families and advocate for laws and protections to ensure others can have similar experiences.

The Tampa Pride Diversity Parade will be broadcast live on ABC Action News Plus at 4 p.m. on Saturday. For those interested in attending the parade or other festivities, more information can be found on the ABC Action News website. Join in the celebration of diversity and unity at Tampa Pride 2024!
