Las Vegas Raiders Make Moves in Free Agency, Rise in Power Rankings
The Las Vegas Raiders have been making moves this offseason, with several key players leaving the team while also bringing in new talent. Linebacker Robert Spillane, safety Tre’von Moehrig, and cornerback Nate Hobbs are among those who have departed, but the team has retained defensive Malcolm Koonce and defensive tackle Adam Butler.
One of the biggest moves was the extension of Maxx Crosby, the team’s All-Pro edge rusher and best player. Additionally, the Raiders traded for starting quarterback Geno Smith, adding a new face to lead the offense.
In terms of signings, the Raiders have brought in safety Jeremy Chinn, cornerbacks Lonnie Johnson Jr. and Eric Stokes, and veteran linebacker Elandon Roberts. These additions, along with the subtractions and retainment, have caught the attention of Sporting News’ Vinnie Iyer, who has boosted the Raiders up six spots in his latest early power-ranking.
The Raiders, originally ranked No. 29, are now sitting at No. 23. Iyer believes that under the leadership of fiery Pete Carroll and savvy Chip Kelly, the team will be much more competitive. Carroll has emphasized the importance of competition and instilling a new culture in the team.
One area of focus for the Raiders is the run game, which was a weak point in the 2024 season. Carroll is looking to improve the rushing offense, and there is speculation that the team could use their No. 6 pick in the upcoming NFL Draft to select Boise State’s Ashton Jeanty.
