New Cruise Port Development in West Central Florida Sparks Controversy and Community Concerns

New Cruise Port Proposed in West Central Florida Amid Height Restrictions

Manatee County, FL — Plans are underway for a new cruise port in West Central Florida, as larger cruise ships face height restrictions under the Sunshine Skyway Bridge. SSA Marine and Tampa-based Slip Knott LLC have unveiled a proposal for the port, which would be located adjacent to the iconic bridge, aiming to enhance the region’s position in the evolving cruise industry.

“Our vision is rooted in a simple idea: enhancing West Central Florida’s position in an evolving cruise industry, while respecting the surrounding environment, creating long-term economic opportunities for the local community, and supporting regional tourism,” the developers stated on the project’s website.

The ambitious project is expected to take three to five years to complete, following the planning stages, according to Cruise Industry News. It is projected to generate approximately $1.6 billion in labor earnings for the state and region, alongside the creation of over 31,000 jobs during the construction phase.

In a strategic move, SSA Marine has privately invested in the development and recently acquired the 710-acre Rattlesnake Key through its subsidiary, the Rattlesnake Key Preservation Company. The developers emphasized their commitment to conservation, stating, “We recognize Rattlesnake Key is a treasured local community asset that has long been the subject of concern regarding potential future commercial development. Our intent in purchasing the property is to remove any possibility of private commercialization and ensure its conservation.”

However, not everyone is on board with the proposed cruise port. Local resident Corey McKevver has initiated an online petition opposing the project, which has garnered over 7,000 signatures as of January 21. The petition highlights the ecological significance of Rattlesnake Key, stating, “Rattle Snake Key is a unique coastal ecosystem brimming with marine life. Seagrass meadows, mangrove forests, and coral reefs thrive here, playing essential roles in supporting fish populations and protecting our shorelines.”

McKevver urges fellow residents to join the cause, emphasizing the need to protect local swimming spots, fishing grounds, and camping sites. “Let’s stand together to protect our family’s swimming spots, fishing grounds, and camping sites. Sign this petition to urge Manatee County officials to find alternative, more sustainable solutions for tourism development. We must act now before it’s too late. Preserve Rattle Snake Key for generations to come.”

As the debate unfolds, the future of the proposed cruise port remains uncertain, with strong sentiments on both sides regarding its potential impact on the local community and environment.
