JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A shocking video capturing a Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO) deputy repeatedly striking an unarmed Black man during a traffic stop has ignited outrage among civil rights advocates and local lawmakers. The incident, which occurred on February 19, 2025, involves 22-year-old William McNeil Jr., who was pulled from his vehicle and assaulted after questioning the reason for the stop.
The footage, which has since gone viral, shows a deputy smashing through McNeil’s driver-side window before delivering multiple punches to his face. As McNeil is forcibly removed from his car, he is held down by several officers, who continue to strike him. According to McNeil’s attorneys, Harry M. Daniels and Ben Crump, the altercation began when McNeil asked to speak to a supervisor after being told he was stopped for having his headlights on during daylight hours.
“I am absolutely disgusted by the actions of these officers but, unfortunately, I’m not surprised,” Daniels stated. “The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office has a long history of this kind of needless violence and brutality.”
Crump echoed these sentiments, emphasizing that McNeil posed no threat. “He was calmly exercising his constitutional rights and they beat him for it,” he said.
Florida State Senator Shevrin Jones (SD-34) also weighed in, calling the incident a “sickening reminder of the systemic issues that plague our law enforcement.” He condemned the excessive force used against McNeil, highlighting the broader implications of racial bias within policing. “This incident is not isolated; it is part of a painful pattern that further erodes trust between law enforcement and the communities they are sworn to protect,” Jones remarked.
