Celebrating Pride: A Month of Joy and Unity in Tampa Bay

As June unfolds, the Tampa Bay area is set to come alive with vibrant celebrations honoring Pride Month, a time dedicated to the LGBTQ+ community and the legacy of the Stonewall riots of 1969. This month-long celebration not only commemorates a pivotal moment in history but also showcases the diversity and resilience of the community through a series of exciting events.

A Month of Festivities

Every weekend in June promises something special, from block parties to art shows and concerts featuring fan favorites. The highlight of the month will undoubtedly be the St. Pete Pride Parade, one of the largest pride parades in the nation, along with various other local festivities that promote inclusivity and equality.

Kickoff Party
The festivities kick off on June 1 with a Pride Kickoff Party in St. Petersburg’s Grand Central District. Central Avenue will be closed off for a community night filled with fun, featuring a special appearance by Suzie Toot, a beloved contestant from “RuPaul’s Drag Race” Season 17. The event runs from 7 to 10 p.m. and is free to the public.

Youth Pride and Family Day
On June 7, families and allies are invited to North and South Straub Park for the fourth annual Youth Pride and Family Day. This event will feature family-focused activities, vendors, and performances, creating a welcoming atmosphere for all ages from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Gulfport Pride Festival
Also on June 7, Gulfport will host its annual Pride festival along Beach Boulevard, celebrating diversity with a colorful walking parade and live music. The festivities will run from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., offering a marketplace and food trucks for attendees to enjoy.

A Rich History

The Stonewall riots, which took place in June 1969, marked a turning point in the fight for LGBTQ+ rights. Patrons and drag performers at the Stonewall Inn in New York City stood up against police harassment, igniting a movement that continues to inspire change today. This month, Tampa Bay honors that legacy with events that encourage unity and acceptance.

Highlights of the Month

  • Dunedin Pride Golf Cart Parade: Kicking off on June 30, this unique parade will culminate at a Dunedin Blue Jays baseball game, blending sports and pride in a fun-filled evening.

  • Maze Exhibit: Throughout June, the FloridaRAMA Gallery will host an exhibit exploring monumental moments in LGBTQ+ history, with a reception on June 6.

  • Transtastic Celebration: On June 18, the local trans and nonbinary community will be celebrated with performances and messages of solidarity at The James Museum.

  • St. Pete Pride Parade and Festival: The grand finale on June 28 will feature a festival in North Straub Park, followed by the Trans Pride March and the main parade along Bayshore Drive, drawing tens of thousands of attendees.

Join the Celebration

As the month progresses, residents and visitors alike are encouraged to participate in these events, celebrating love, diversity, and the ongoing fight for equality. Whether you’re attending a concert, enjoying a family day, or marching in the parade, there’s something for everyone in Tampa Bay this June.
