Paul Goldschmidt Returns to Yankees Lineup, Leads Off Against Phillies

Paul Goldschmidt made his return to the Yankees’ lineup on Saturday after being sidelined by a sore back for a few days. However, he did so in an unfamiliar role as he was asked to lead off against the Phillies and left-hander Jesús Luzardo.

The veteran first baseman, known for his righty-swinging power, was asked to take on the leadoff role typically held by lefty-swinging Austin Wells this spring. Despite not having led off in a game before, Goldschmidt embraced the opportunity, stating, “I’ll do whatever you guys need me to do.”

Manager Aaron Boone explained that he values Goldschmidt’s ability to get on base, with a career .381 OBP, making him a strong candidate for the leadoff spot. Even in a down year in 2024, Goldschmidt maintained a solid .839 OPS against left-handed pitchers, making him a threat in any lineup position.

While Goldschmidt has primarily hit in the middle of the lineup throughout his career, Boone expressed openness to the idea of using him as a leadoff hitter against lefties. Goldschmidt himself acknowledged that he may have led off in the past, possibly in the minors, but is ready to take on the challenge at the major league level.

As the Yankees continue to experiment with their lineup options this spring, Goldschmidt’s versatility and willingness to adapt could make him a valuable asset in various roles throughout the upcoming season.
