Florida Panthers Blank Tampa Bay Lightning 2-0 in Game 2 to Take 2-0 Series Lead
The Florida Panthers continued their dominance in the Eastern Conference first-round series against the Tampa Bay Lightning with a 2-0 victory on Thursday night. Nate Schmidt’s early goal and Sergei Bobrovsky’s shutout performance sealed the win for the defending Stanley Cup champions, who now lead the series 2-0.
Bobrovsky, with his fourth career playoff shutout, made 19 saves to stifle the Lightning’s offense. Sam Bennett added an empty-net goal to secure the victory. Schmidt, who scored a pair of goals in Game 1, made history as the sixth defenseman in NHL history to open the postseason with three goals in the first two games.
Despite the Lightning’s efforts, they couldn’t find the back of the net, leaving star forward Nikita Kucherov on a 12-game goal-scoring drought in the playoffs. The game was not short of intensity, with chippy plays between the rivals culminating in a major penalty for Tampa Bay’s Brandon Hagel for an interference hit on Florida captain Aleksander Barkov.
The Panthers now head back home with a comfortable series lead, while the Lightning look to regroup and bounce back in Game 3 on Saturday. With tensions high and the stakes even higher, the Sunshine State rivals are set for an intense battle as the series continues.
