Chaos Erupts Near Tampa Courthouse as Road Rage Incident Turns Violent

TAMPA, Fla. — A shocking road rage incident unfolded near a downtown courthouse Wednesday morning, leaving witnesses in disbelief and prompting a swift police response. Just after 8 a.m., chaos erupted on East Kennedy Boulevard when a driver, identified as 29-year-old Kevin Arriola, allegedly opened fire on another vehicle, narrowly avoiding a potential tragedy.

The scene was marked by a bullet-riddled windshield and a palpable sense of fear as people arrived for work and court appointments. Witnesses described the harrowing moments when gunfire erupted just steps from the courthouse.

“When you’re walking by and you see the extent of the damage, it’s just by a miracle of God that she didn’t get hit or die,” said witness Bryant Camareno. “Those bullets could have easily killed her.”

According to police, Arriola was driving erratically on the Selmon Expressway off-ramp when he collided with several cars. He then exited his gray Mazda, brandishing a firearm, and began shooting at a red Chrysler 300, hitting it multiple times.

“The guy jumped out of his car, ran to the car on the left side of traffic, and started shooting,” recalled witness Reggie Gittens. “I could see him in my rearview mirror shooting that car, and I heard about six or seven shots — and then he looked like he was turning toward me.”

Thanks to the quick actions of sheriff’s deputies stationed at the nearby courthouse, Arriola was detained within minutes. Footage from 10 Tampa Bay News captured the moment officers led him away in handcuffs.

“The Heavenly Father protected everybody,” Gittens remarked. “There was no fatality, and the woman in that vehicle he shot up, like nine shots, was unscathed.”

Tampa Police Chief Lee Bercaw condemned the incident, calling it “an extremely dangerous and senseless situation that could have easily resulted in tragedy.” He expressed gratitude for the swift response from the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, which helped prevent any serious injuries.

Investigators believe this was an isolated case of road rage, emphasizing that no one was injured in the shooting or the subsequent crashes. Authorities reassured the public that there was no threat to the nearby school or courthouse.

“It happened outside of the courthouse where there’s a courtroom full of deputies and there’s a police station right down the road,” Camareno noted. “That’s what makes it scarier—this person didn’t think about those consequences, he just started shooting.”

Arriola now faces multiple charges, including first-degree attempted murder, aggravated battery with a firearm, possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and shooting into a vehicle.

In the aftermath, Kennedy Boulevard was closed between the Selmon off-ramp and Jefferson Street for several hours as investigators worked the scene, but it reopened before 11:30 a.m., restoring normalcy to the bustling downtown area.

As the community reflects on the incident, many are left grateful that a potentially deadly situation ended without loss of life.
