Sharks Fall Short Against Lightning in 4-1 Defeat on Road Trip Finale

Sharks Fall to Lightning in Final Game of Road Trip

Tampa Bay, FL – The San Jose Sharks mounted a spirited effort in the third period but ultimately fell short, succumbing to the Tampa Bay Lightning 4-1 on Tuesday night. The loss capped off a challenging four-game road trip for the Sharks, who now sit at 25-21-3 on the season.

The Sharks struck first, with winger Tyler Toffoli finding the net at 14:37 in the first period, courtesy of assists from William Eklund and Alexander Wennberg. However, the Lightning quickly responded, scoring just 33 seconds later. Nikita Kucherov capitalized on a turnover by defenseman Sam Dickinson, setting up Anthony Cirelli, who fed Brandon Hagel for a tap-in goal.

The second period saw the Lightning extend their lead. After Cirelli scored early in the frame, Sharks goalie Yaroslav Askarov misplayed a pass behind the net, allowing Gage Goncalves to set up Jake Guentzel for his 22nd goal of the season at 3:17.

Hagel sealed the game with an empty-net goal with just over two minutes left in regulation, marking the Sharks’ third loss in five games.

“We didn’t win enough pucks in all three zones, especially the offensive zone,” said Sharks coach Ryan Warsofsky. “We did some good things in that first period, but we handed them one there at the end of the first. The second we weren’t great, and the third we kind of ran out of gas.”

Askarov finished with 16 saves, struggling to find his rhythm with just one win in his last five starts. His counterpart, Andrei Vasilevskiy, made 22 saves, including nine in the third period, showcasing his prowess in goal.

Despite the loss, Toffoli noted, “I think we found a way to generate some more opportunities, but that’s also a very good goalie in there.” Kucherov was a standout for the Lightning, contributing three assists and totaling eight points in two games against the Sharks this season.

Macklin Celebrini, the Sharks’ leading scorer with 72 points, was held without a point for the second consecutive game, a rare occurrence for the rookie. “I think it was just tough to get stuff going offensively,” said Sharks rookie center Michael Misa. “We had some chances, but we just couldn’t score.”

The Sharks’ road trip ended with a 2-2-0 record, having defeated teams like the Washington Capitals and Florida Panthers while falling to top-tier opponents like the Lightning and the Detroit Red Wings. The Sharks have struggled in the second half of back-to-backs, now holding a 3-6-1 record in such situations this season.

Looking ahead, the Sharks return to San Jose to host the New York Rangers on Friday, eager to bounce back from this setback. The team is hoping to build on their recent success against lower-ranked teams while finding a way to compete with the league’s elite.

NOTES: Rookie winger Igor Chernyshov, who had two assists in Monday’s win, was a healthy scratch against the Lightning. Adam Gaudette, who was previously scratched, returned to the lineup but did not register a point. Forward Jeff Skinner and defenseman Vincent Iorio were also healthy scratches.
