New Orleans Saints Facing Cap Issues and Uncertainty with Quarterback Situation in 2025

The New Orleans Saints are facing some tough decisions this offseason as they navigate their cap issues. One of the biggest questions they need to answer is the future of Pro Bowl quarterback Derek Carr. Carr signed a lucrative four-year, $150 million deal with the Saints, but there is a potential out in the contract this offseason before his cap hit balloons to over $51 million.

Head coach Kellen Moore recently spoke about Carr, praising him but stopping short of fully committing to him. The Saints could save just under $9 million by moving on from Carr with a post-June 1 designation, resulting in $30 million in cap savings but a $21.5 million dead-cap charge.

With the quarterback position up in the air, speculation is swirling about who will be under center for the Saints in 2025. Sporting News’ Bill Bender predicted that Justin Fields could be a potential option, but the cost of acquiring him may be prohibitive. Other options could include sticking with Carr or turning to Spencer Rattler.

Ultimately, the Saints have a lot of work to do beyond just saving $9 million. The quarterback dilemma will be a tough one to solve, but the team will need to make a decision soon as they look to navigate their cap issues and build a competitive roster for the upcoming season.
